Atul Sobti is new BHEL chief

New Delhi, Jan 1 (UNI) Atul Sobti, 56, has taken over as BHEL chairman and managing director, the company said in a statement today.
The post fell vacant on retirement of incumbent BHEL chief BP Rao who completed his extended term yesterday.
Prior to this, Mr Sobti was director on the BHEL board, handling two crucial portfolios of power and finance.
Significantly, as director (Power), Mr Sobti was responsible for spearheading and strategising for the Power Sector business of BHEL and under his stewardship, BHEL’s power business has achieved major milestones including the highest ever capacity addition/synchronization of 13,452 MW and 11,941 MW in financial years 2013-14 and 2014-15, respectively.
Mr Sobti has taken charge of BHEL at a time when the company is faced with declining orders due to slowdown in the power sector.
Going forward, Mr Sobti’s challenge will be to diversify company’s business portfolios and reduce its dependence on power sector.
