Attacks on Nigerians: Swaraj says impartial probe will be done & proper action taken

New Delhi, Mar 30 (UNI) Expressing concern over the recent attacks on Nigerian nationals in Noida, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today assured the Rajya Sabha that an impartial probe would be carried out and necessary action would be taken against the guilty. Responding to the concern expressed by several Members during Zero Hour, over the attacks on two African nationals in Noida, Ms Swaraj said,'the incidents are unfortunate. As soon as I got information about the incident of attack on a Nigerian National in Greater Noida, I got in touch with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and sought a report from the state government. The UP CM said an impartial probe would be conducted. 'We are awaiting the results of the probe. I assure the House that an impartial probe will be carried out and necessary action will be taken in the matter. We are committed to ensure that the incidents do not recur,' he added. She said the injured Nigerian students are also being treated. Earlier, raising the issue, Sharad Yadav of the JD(U) said the Government should ensure that foreign nationals staying in India are not attacked.’’ Anand Sharma of the Congress said former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had taken an initiative to support students from African countries. "We brought students from Africa every year on scholarships,' he said. Expressing concern over the incidents of attack on Nigerian nationals, he said, 'India's name has now been sullied throughout the world after the recent incidents of attack on African nationals." Sitaram Yechury of the CPI(M) said the House should bring a special resolution to condemn the incidents. Supporting him, Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the House should condemn the incidents and suggested that the Chair should bring a resolution in this regard tomorrow. Pratap Singh Bajwa of the Congress said all the goodwill the government has built up in Africa will be lost with such incidents. Expressing concern over the issue, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said, 'we are all concerned over the racial attacks. If we condemn the racial attacks on Indians abroad, racial attacks in our country cannot be justified. The Government should take action.' UNI AR AE 1323
