Assamese film director Munin Barua dead

Guwahati, Apr 7 (UNI) Eminent film director of Assamese cinema Munin Barua breathed his last here a little past midnight, casting a pall of gloom in the entire film fraternity. He was 71.
Barua died at his city residence at around 0145 hours today, family sources said.
His last rites were performed with full state honours at Nabagraha crematorium in the city this evening, which was attended by leading personalities of the cultural world and his fans.
Barua, a National Film Award winner, was credited with reviving the fortunes of the Assamese film industry with his 2000 blockbuster ‘Hiya Diya Niya’.
He had started off as a script writer and an assistant director, before donning the director's hat himself.
Barua's death has been condoled widely, including by the Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and state Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary.
