Assam paralysed by bandh against citizenship bill

Guwahati, Jan 8 (UNI) Life has been paralyzed across Assam today in view of a statewide bandh called by influential All Assam Students Union (AASU) and supported by over 100 organisations and political parties.
The bandh has been called against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which is scheduled to be tabled in the Lok Sabha today.
The bandh also coincides with a two day 'chakka bandh', starting today, against various provisions in the amended motor vehicle act.
Sporadic incidents of violence have been reported from different parts since morning.
In Golaghat, bandh supporters ransacked the district BJP office and torched all furniture.
In Guwahati, miscreants broke windows of stationary vehicles near the Raj Bhawan and Noonmati.
Buses were damaged in Demow, Chabua and Sivsagar, among other places.
Tyres were burnt on the roads across the state,,with AASU leaders and members taking part in such demonstrations.
In Moran in eastern part of the state, picketers blocked railway tracks, disrupting train movement.
The 11-hour statewide bandh has been supported by North East Students Organization (NESO) and 30 associate groups of AASU,, along with Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and a conglomerate of 70 organizations.
Political parties, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which quit the state's coalition government yesterday over the Bill, and Opposition Congress and AIUDF, have also supported the bandh.
The Bill seeks to give Indian citizenship to persecuted religious minorities of select neighboring countries.
