Guwahati, Oct 7 (UNI) Retired DIG of Assam Police, PK Dutta, an alleged mastermind of police recruitment exam scam who was detained at the Nepal border yesterday, has been remanded in six days CID custody by a local court here today.
Dutta, who was shown as arrested by the CID, Assam Police, this morning after his arrival in Guwahati in the wee hours today, was produced in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate here.
The CID sought seven days remand, but the court forwarded Dutta to six days remand of the CID.
His health check-up, including COVID 19 test, was conducted at the MMC Hospital here before being produced in the court.
Dutta, accompanied by his son and son-in-law, was detained by the border security personnel along the Nepal border yesterday while reportedly trying to return to India after having escaped when the scam had come to light last month.
The CID, Assam Police, had issued a look out notice against Dutta.
He was handed over to West Bengal Police, and a team of Assam Police, led by the Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police, had travelled to West Bengal yesterday to take him over.
The Kokrajhar SP handed Dutta to another Assam Police team, led by ADGP GP Singh, at Kokrajhar late last night and he was brought to Guwahati by road last night itself, with the team reaching CID headquarter here in the wee hours today.
Dutta is among the prime accused in the scam pertaining to leak of question paper for recruitment of sub-inspectors of Assam Police which was scheduled on September 22.
The examination was cancelled and has now been re-scheduled for November.
Another suspected mastermind, Diban Deka, a ruling BJP leader, has also been arrested, along with 20 other accused, including candidates.
The CID, Crime Branch of Guwahati Police and other district police have registered separate cases into the scam.
