Around 700 flights canceled in Chicago airport over heavy snowfall

Chicago, Jan 18 (UNI) More than 690 flights have been canceled in the airports of Chicago over a heavy snowstorm, the Chicago Department of Aviation said.

"Due to winter weather in Chicago, airlines at ORD have cancelled 690+ flights. Check flight status w/ carrier." O'Hare Intl. Airport said in a tweet.

According to the department, 686 flights were canceled on Friday at the O’Hare International Airport, while 169 more at the Midway International Airport. About 470 flights have been delayed over the snowfall.

The snowstorm hit Chicago on Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service warned about hazardous road conditions because of the snowfall. The area was covered under 5 inches of snow before the storm moved out early Saturday morning.

Chicago tribune reported that the Federal Aviation Administration has imposed a ground-stop at O’Hare International Airport on Friday evening, halting all inbound flights scheduled to arrive at the airport. However, the stop does not affect Midway Airport at this time, city Department of Aviation spokesperson Karen Pride said.
