Srinagar, Jun 14 (UNI) The Army on Thursday paid rich tribute to a soldier killed in a snow avalanche in Nowgam sector in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara in December.
Defence Ministry spokesperson told UNI that that in a solemn ceremony at BB Cantt, Maj Gen S K Sharma, Chief of Staff Chinar Corps and all ranks paid homage to the martyr on behalf of a proud nation.
“Sep Shammi Singh was part of an Operational Team which was serving in the formidable heights along the Line of Control (LoC). Sep Shammi Singh and another soldier Sepoy Koushal Singh went missing after slipping from a mountain following an avalanche, triggered by heavy snowfall at Nowgam sector on December 11,” he said.
He said the Search and Rescue operations re-commenced after the snow melted and ended on Wednesday.
“The 26-year-old martyr had joined the Army in 2012. He belonged to Village Makroli of Indora Tehsil in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh and is survived by his parents,” Col Kalia said.
He said the mortal remains of the martyr were flown for last rites to his native place, where he would be laid to rest with full military honours.
“In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the bereaved family of the martyr and remains committed to their dignity and well being,” he added.
The body of Sepoy Koushal Singh was recovered on December 16.
