Armed Forces Flag Day observed at Raj Bhavan

Panaji, Dec 7 (UNI) Armed Forces Flag Day was observed at Raj Bhavan in the presence of Governor Dr Mridula Sinha, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma, IAS, defence personnel, ex-servicemen and others here on Thursday.
While addressing the gathering, the Governor said everyone must be obliged to the armed forces for their services towards nation.
“Defense has always been at the fore front on the border to let us live free from terrorism. Hence, general public must contribute in large numbers towards the armed forces personnel and their families. Keep the spirit of gratitude alive and also help in spreading it,” she said.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Parrikar said this was a day to remember the armed forces and the sacrifices made by them.
“Funds are collected every year from general public in the aid of armed forces and the general public seems to be sensitive towards it. However, proper utilization of these funds is important,” he said.
Stating that he was aware of the grievances faced by the armed forces and their families in the state, he said Goa would be made as a model state for them.
“Though Goa is not so dense in terms of servicemen, the state has substantial population which aims to join the forces. As jawans and other non-official cadre retire early, there is barely any scope to start afresh. So, the Government intends to provide proper rehabilitation for such personnel,” he said.
The Chief Minister and the Governor later presented awards to Directorate of Education, Directorate of Women and Child and Captain of Ports Department respectively for their contribution in raising funds for armed forces.
Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma, IAS, also spoke on the occasion. Major Venugopal Nair (Retd) compered and proposed vote of thanks.
