Amul to launch camel milk at 3 places in Gujarat

Anand, Jan 22 (UNI) In yet another first in the dairy sector in India, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF), the cooperative umbrella body of the 18 dairies of Gujarat that markets products of brand Amul, said that it would launch its camel milk at three places in Gujarat; Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Kutch from Wednesday.
Managing Director of GCMMF, RS Sodhi told UNI that the milk in a bottle of 500 ml would cost Rs 50.
'Though the camel milk has comparatively low self life yet it was full of nutritional as well as medicinal values. Scientific studies have shown that it was good for diabetes management as well as an immune booster. It was also well accepted by the system of those who were otherwise lactose -intolerant,' he said.
'We had launched Camel chocolate earlier last year which was liked by the people and now we are going to launch the camel milk from tomorrow. It is first time ever in India that any dairy is going to sell the camel milk. We are currently collecting around four to five thousand liters of camel milk through our dairy in Kutch. In due course we would expand its market,' he added.
'Our Camel milk is easy to digest and healthy milk with numerous benefits, most prominent of which is that the milk is high in an insulin-like protein, making it beneficial for diabetic person. Camel milk is being used for thousands of years across various cultures and benefits of milk even finds mentioned in Ayurvedic texts. Research articles are also suggested that the Camel milk is also beneficial to those having dairy allergies as it contains no allergens. Sourced from Kutch, the milk will be available in a 500 ml PET bottle priced at Rs. 50. It needs to be refrigerated with a shelf life of 3 days. Amul had earlier introduced a camel milk chocolate in the market which continues to receive a good response,' he said.
Sahjeevan NGO, Bhuj and Kutch District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited also known as Sarhad Dairy, Kutch have motivated camel farmers for this project. This initiative will give them better prices and will benefit consumers by giving them hygienically processed, superior quality camel milk., he further added.
