Amit Shah surveys flood affected areas in Karnataka

Belagavi, Aug 11 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah surveyed flood affected areas in River Krishna basin in Karnataka and south Maharashtra on Sunday and promised all help from the union government in the efforts made by the two state governments to bring relief to flood affected people.

Amit Shah came to this city by a special aircraft in the afternoon and soon left in the company of Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on a aerial survey of the worst affected areas in the two states coming under Belagavi, Bagalkot in Karnataka, Sangli and Kolhapur districts in Maharashtra.

His visit to Karnataka comes close on heels of Union minster Nirmala Sitaraman visiting the flood affected areas in the state during the last two days.

Speaking to reporters after the aerial survey, Yediyurappa said at least 15 districts in Karnataka had suffered under the unprecedented heavy rains and floods caused by deluge in the neighouring staes of Maharashtra in the North and in Wayanad district in the south that caused heavy floods in Rivers Krishna and Cauvery, besides in the coastal and Western Ghat districts in the state and the state government had been working overtime to bring relief to the flood affected. It had set up relief centres in all the affected districts and relief materials was being supplied to over three lakh people who had taken shelter in these relief centres.

Speaking after taking a aerial survey in the worst affected Belagavi and Bagalkot districts, he said here on Sunday that he had reviewed the situation again, in the company of Amit Shah today in Karnataka and the union government had assured all help after a complete assessment is made in the next few days.

He said he would visit other flood affected districts of coastal and Western ghat districts in the next two days and meet the affected people and take decisions on further line up further relief measures to the affected population.

In Belagavi Chief secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar and other officials briefed him about the situation.

Mr Bhaskar said that according to Indian Meteorological Department forecast, rainfall would subside from August 13 and the situation would be under control. The CM was was here to receive Union home minister Amit Shah who conducted an aerial survey of flood affected areas in Belagavi and Bagalkot districts.
IMD has declared Orange alert on Sunday and yellow alert on Tuesday. Rainfall is expected to reduce significantly from Wednesday. Deputy Commissioners have been asked to pay a compensation of Rs five lakh to the families of those who died in the floods within 48 hours. As many as 34 have died in the floods across the state till now, the officer said. The state government, along with NDRF, SDRF, army, fire and emergency personnel and other rescue agencies have shifted over three lakh people.
Relief centres have been providing food, shelter clothing, and medicines to inmates. Relief centres are also taking care of cattle and animals and providing them shelter and fodder.
For all these purposes, Rs 100 crore has been released by the state government. According to preliminary estimates, agriculture and horticulture crops on 4.15 lakh hectares have been damaged.

Connectivity on 136 roads has been cut off due to land slides and flooding on national and state highways and district main road and other roads. Officials have already begun surveys of crop loss and infrastructure loss, Mr Bhaskar informed Mr Yediyurappa.

Central ministers Prahlad Joshi and Suresh Angadi, Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore, Additional chief secretary Rajaneesh Goel, CM’s secretary Shivayogi Kalasad, IGP Raghavendra Suhas , DC S B Bommanahalli, Commissioner of police B S Lokesh Kumar, ZP CEO K V Rajendra, SP Lakshman Nimbargi, and others were present.
Meanwhile Yediyurappa. Sid the State requested Amit Shah to provide an immediate relief of Rs 3000 crore as the State had suffered at least Rs 40,000 crore loss due to floods, to take up the relief measures.
Yediyurappa said the State Government employees had agreed to pay one day salary (Around Two hundred crores rupees) to the flood relief fund. ‘’I request to industrialists to need more financial help to the flood relief fund, this is fully help to take more development works to the flood victims,’’ Chief minister said.
