Amit Shah chairs GoM on proposed privatization of Air India

New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday chaired the first meeting of Group of Ministers (GoM) on proposed disinvestment of National carrier Air India which is struggling with a huge financial difficulties since long.
The other members of GoM Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce Minister Piyush Goel and Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also participated.
The GoM discussed the airline’s debt position and issuance of the expression of interest, which will formally kick off the government’s second attempt to sell the beleaguered national carrier, sources in the Ministry said.
After the meeting, the Civil Aviation Minister said "First meeting took place. It was a productive meeting. All issues have been taken on board. We are going to take all the decisions in a defined period of time. Process for divestment of Air India is truly underway and the next meeting of AISAM will be held very soon”.
The AISAM or Air India Specific Alternative Mechanism is a panel which was formed last year to see the disinvestment of the national carrier and that will discuss the airline’s debt position and issuance of the expression of interest, which will formally kick off the government’s second attempt to sell the beleaguered national carrier.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Civil Aviation Minister along with senior bureaucrats met on Wednesday ahead of the meeting of the group of ministers (GoM) that was held on Thursday.
This is the second attempt of the Narendra Modi government to sell Air India. Last year, the government had decided to offload 74 percent stake in the airline but had got no takers, largely because many private players hesitated to be in a joint venture with the Government.
