Lucknow, Oct 1 (UNI) Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Thursday took suo moto cognizance of gang-rape and murder of Hathras Dalit girl and unsymbolic cremation of her body and decided to hear the matter on October 12.
A bench comprising Justice Ranjan Roy and Jaspreet Singh summoned the Hathras District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police along with other states government officials and the family members of the victim 19-year-old girl to be present on the date of hearing.
"We have also pondered over the heinous crime committed against the deceased and though an SIT has been constituted by the State Government, we leave it open for our consideration on future dates, as to the necessity of monitoring the investigation or getting it conducted through an independent agency as per law," the court said.
It further said, "the seat of governance being at Lucknow and the police officials posted in the office of Director General of Police, UP at Lucknow having justified the cremation at night, we have taken cognizance of the matter."
The bench directed the Senior Registrar to register a suo moto Public Interest Litigation.
