Alibaba pitches for women empowerment

New Delhi, Sep 5 (UNI) India could increase its GDP by 16 per cent-60 per cent by 2025 by simply enabling women to participate in the economy at par with men, claimed Chinese multinational giant Alibaba here on Wednesday.
Alibaba and UCWeb hosted a XIN Philanthropic Conference 2018 under the theme ‘Love and Infinity’ to encourage public participation in humanitarian projects.
Its first roundtable session called 'MujheHaqHai' , followed by the opening speech, was dedicated to Women Empowerment which saw the likes of Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal, Indian Fashion Designer and Social Worker Shaina NC and Hindi Cinema actresses and feminists- Kangana Ranaut and Gul Panag.
“I pride myself of being a fearless woman who believes that women empowerment is a movement that has to take over the world. It has been a pleasure for me to be here to witness a brand like Alibaba and
UC which are encouraging women and providing us with a platform where digital literacy and empowerment are primary focuses,” said Ms Ranaut, who is also associated with the 'Shedeservestoknow' empowerment project.
While these influencers and opinion makers discussed the ways to bring women in the mainstream workforce of the country. UN’s Arunima Sen and Lawyer, Social Activist- Abha Singh presented a statistical analysis of how India lags behind in the women representation with only 11 per cent in both the Houses of Parliament despite them being the 50 per cent of the entire population.
Ms Singh said that only education will never help a woman grow faster, ''we need an amalgamation of both education and vocational skills''.
In a one of its own kind programme, Meghan Fallone, CEO of Barefoot College International came forward to celebrate the Barefoot Solar Mamas. In general, the women from rural areas light up the world with their skills of making solar panels. “Women love to share their knowledge. You teach a woman something and she would teach the whole world about it,” she said.
In Alibaba group, women make up more than 40 per cent of total workforce with almost 34 per cent of senior managers.
The company also launched a UC Shiksha with an aim to contribute towards education of children by donating books to the needy children in India. In collaboration with 10 charitable organisations and philanthropic advocates in India, UC Browser will soon launch the UC Hope, a charity channel for local charitable content. The idea is to increase users’ awareness on the social issues in the country and to nurture empathy by news-feeding the philanthropic content.
“As the world’s first Internet company that integrates philanthropy into its core strategy,” Shunyan Zhu, President of UC, Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group, said“Alibaba’s philanthropy is without a border. That’s why we take the XIN Philanthropy Conference out of China for the first time, here in India. It shows the importance of India for Alibaba. This is also the first time our Internet plus Philanthropy Model has set its foot on the global path.”
