AI-powered Project SHUDH launched to modernise sewer management in Telangana

Hyderabad, July 11 (UNI) Telangana Information Technology and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu on Saturday launched Project SHUDH, an artificial intelligence-powered sewer governance platform developed by Hyderabad-based deep-tech startup The Bot Factory, aimed at improving urban drainage management and eliminating manual entry into sewers.
The platform was launched at T-Works in Hyderabad, where The Bot Factory is incubated, in the presence of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, All India Robotics Association (AIRA) Chairman Kishshhan, and senior officials.
Speaking on the occasion, Sridhar Babu described Project SHUDH as a pioneering innovation that demonstrates the use of advanced technologies to address critical urban infrastructure challenges.
He said Telangana has emerged as a leading destination for innovation and startups, with the government committed to supporting entrepreneurs developing technology-driven solutions with social impact.
The Minister said the platform could significantly benefit civic agencies such as GHMC and HMWSSB.
Referring to trials conducted with Metro Water Works, he said the system had delivered encouraging results by identifying drain blockages, generating alerts and providing predictive analytics to support proactive maintenance.
He said the government is modernising public systems to promote innovation-led governance and noted that Project SHUDH has the potential to improve drainage management and reduce overflow incidents during the monsoon and other seasons.
HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy said that while the utility has previously deployed robotic technologies for specific operations, Project SHUDH is the first major initiative focused on intelligent monitoring and management of sewer pipelines.
He said the platform has undergone extensive trials and improvements, adding that HMWSSB plans to implement a pilot project in a selected area before expanding its deployment.
The Bot Factory's Robotics Head Nihitha said Project SHUDH represents a shift from conventional sewer cleaning to comprehensive sewer governance.
She said every sewer intervention can be digitally tracked, analysed and monitored, enabling civic bodies to build a transparent and data-driven management system while working towards the goal of zero manual sewer entry.
The AI-powered platform integrates autonomous sewer-cleaning robots, artificial intelligence, GIS and satellite-based monitoring, predictive analytics for blockage detection and real-time governance dashboards for civic authorities.
Besides cleaning and inspection, the system generates digital maps and operational data from underground drainage networks, enabling predictive maintenance and improved asset management.
According to the company, Project SHUDH has been developed to address the continued dependence on manual intervention in sewer maintenance across Indian cities, where workers are often exposed to hazardous conditions when mechanical methods fail.
The initiative aligns with national priorities on worker safety, Smart Cities and digital governance by promoting safer, technology-driven public service delivery. UNI KNR SAS
