Ahmad Patel, the modern Chanakya of Congress

New Delhi, Nov 25 (UNI) Starting politics at the taluk level in Gujarat, Ahmed Patel, who passed away in a Gurugram hospital on Wednesday at the age of 71, dedicated his life to strengthening the Congress by becoming a troubleshooter and its Chanakya.
As the political advisor to interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi, he continued to work for strengthening the party organisation, rejecting the invitation to become a minister at the Centre when the party was in power. As the behind-the-scenes organisation man, he was poll strategist, consensus-builder and troubleshooter all in one who was busy in stitching alliances across various states and parties, playing a key role in the seat-sharing and ticket distribution.
Known as Chanakya of the Congress, he had on several occasions worked to extricate the party out of a crisis. While working in important positions in the party, he was widely seen as the right hand man of the Congress president. He was currently the treasurer of the Congress and was given this responsibility for the second time.
