Afghan president to step down, interim govt to be formed as Taliban enter Kabul

Kabul, Aug 15 (UNI) Afghan President Ashraf Ghani will relinquish power today and an interim government will be formed, news reports said as the Taliban entered the Afghan capital.
According to Al Arabiya and multiple news sites, Ghani conveyed this during a meeting at the Presidential Palace with representatives of the Taliban after the militia entered Kabul and surrounded the city.
According to other outlets, the Taliban strongman Mullah Ghani Baradar will take charge of governance at the palace in Kabul.
A Taliban spokesman said the militants are "awaiting a peaceful transfer of Kabul city".
Earlier, Afghanistan’s acting Interior Minister Abdul Sattar Mirzkwal said in a message that Kabul will not be attacked and the transfer of power will take place peacefully.
After their forces entered Kabul, a Taliban delegation attended a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Kabul with Ashraf Ghani and US plus NATO officials.
Meanwhile, multiple columns of smoke were seen over the US embassy in Kabul, with reports that it was from the burning of sensitive documents by the embassy staff.
Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters were also seen flying to the embassy and doing the rounds between the embassy and the airport.
