AERB begins probe into the mishap at Kakrapar atomic power station

Ahmedabad, Mar 12 (UNI) A team from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) arrived today at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) near Surat to inquire into the cause of leakage of heavy water from one of the two reactors forcing its closure and declaration of an internal emergency in the facility.
Power generation in the nuclear plant remained completely disrupted for the second day even as KAPS authorities claimed there was no radioactive release due to the leakage of heavy water.
One of the two 220 MW units of KAPS was shut down after leakage of heavy water, which is used for cooling off the nuclear reactor core, reported around 0900 hrs yesterday. A site emergency was also declared as a measure of safety, although officials said there was no radioactive leak and all the workers were safe.
There is no row at position 0.
