A rebel nightingale of south India who refused the Padma award as a much delayed one

Chennai, July 12 (UNI) Iconic playback singer S Janaki, who passed away on Saturday, was a rebel who upheld self-respect by promptly declining the Padma award in 2013 since it came much delayed for her more than half a century of service to music.
The funeral was held with state honours in Mysore on Sunday. Since her son had predeceased her, she was living with her daughter in law and grand-children. Her demise, coming close on the heels of the departures of Bharathiraja and K Bhagyaraj, has left the film fraternity and her ardent fans in grief.
When the then Manmohan Singh Government announced the Padma Bhushan for her, she was in Hyderabad. Having won the National award for the song ‘Senthoora Poove’ in Bharathiraja’s directorial debut ‘16 Vayathinle’ with music scored by maestro Ilayaraja in 1977, she had by then received it three more times besides other state awards.
