Sikkim landslide claims 6 lives,injures 3

Gangtok, Sep 20 (UNI) At least six people, three of them minors, perished and three were injured in landslides early today as heavy rains pounded this Himalayan state. The first landslip occurred at Upper Gurpisey in Namchi district in South Sikkim at 0200 hours. One house collapsed fully and three partially, burying three persons alive. Two seriously injured were rushed to hospital, police said. Those dead were identified as Nikhil Rai(11), Nikita Rai(15) and P Bhutis (21). The two injured were rushed to the Namchi Hospital. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bimal Rai was camping at the spot with policemen and rescue teams looking for possible survivors. The second incident occurred half an hour later at Upper Bokrong, fully damaging the house of one Rajkumar Tamang. Two women died in the collapse, police added. Search was on for more survivors. In a similar tragedy at Khorlong a boy in his early teens was greviously injured. He was rushed to the Namthang Hospital where he died. A youth suffered serious injuries in another house collapse at Lower Kateng Bokrong. He is being treated at the Namthang Hospital. Many landslips have occurred on the road between Phong and Namchi due to the torrential rains which began last night. Officials said restoration work was underway. Traffic has been restricted to one way between Martam and Singtam on NH 10 in East Sikkim. In West and South Sikkim many roads were fully or partially closed owing to landslides. UNI XC PL
