5 ways to avoid skin trouble owing to UV rays exposure

New Delhi, Aug 13 (UNI) Chasing the sun is a good practice best left to poetry.
The truth is the sun’s ultraviolet light does more harm than good to your skin. In fact, sunburns are primarily caused by the ultraviolet radiation from the sun, which has been linked to an increased risk of developing skin cancer.
UV rays are of two types—UVA and UVB. The effects of UV radiation vary depending on the wavelength. For instance, sunburns can be caused by UV-B rays, which have shorter wavelengths, and reach the outer layer of the skin.
UV-A rays, however, have longer wavelengths, therefore penetrating into your skin’s middle layer. Note that UV radiation is at its peak when the sun’s rays are brightest, which is often between late morning and mid-afternoon, in the summer months, and at high altitudes.
One needs to be extra cautious even in humid places, as humidity can increase the effects of UV radiation. UVA rays are associated with deep damage to the skin. The not only cause cosmetic problems such as wrinkles and premature aging, but also potential skin cancers.
Fortunately, though, sun damage accumulates over time, so, one can at least slow, if not reverse, the process by starting to use sunscreen, a critical routine in your skincare.
Ravina Jain, Founder & CEO, The Skin Story and The Beard Story, shares tips to avoid skin trouble owing to UV rays exposure.
1) 15 minutes before stepping outside, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, preferably, 50. Ensure you keep washing it off every two hours and reapplying the sunscreen.
2) Take respite from the sun by sheltering under an umbrella or settling under a tree.
3) In addition to applying sunscreen while out in the sun, one should take precautions and cover themselves to protect themselves from possible excessive amounts of UV exposure.
4) Wearing a wide-brim hat can help protect the head, face, and neck.
5) Slide on a pair of sunglasses to protect the eyes. Try to use a pair of wrap-around sunglasses as they block UV rays from all angles, ensuring the best possible protection for your eyes.
UV rays induce sunburns whose severity varies depending on the time of the day and the sunlight. Sunburn treatment reduces pain, inflammation, and discomfort.
“Begin by rinsing the sunburn with cool water for 20 minutes or until the pain in the area subsides. Alternatively, using a cool, clean compress daily can help,” said Ravina.
“Also use a pain reliever or moisturiser, lotion, or gel. Avoid peeling the skin around the sunburned area as it heals. Avoid popping intact blisters as it can cause infection. Avoid sun exposure while your skin heals.
Seek medical attention if the sunburn is severe or infected,” she added.
Taking precautions to protect from the sun is a year-round obligation because while the sun does make the world go round, it can also pose health hazards.
