Srinagar, Dec 15 (UNI) Three militants were killed and a soldier martyred in an encounter in south Kashmir district of Pulwama on Saturday.
Mobile internet service has been suspended in Pulwama while trains also remained off the tracks for security reasons, official sources said.
Six civilian were also killed and several others were injured in security force action on demonstrators near the encounter site.
They said on a tip-off about the presence of militants, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint search operation at village Sirnoo in Pulwama early this morning. All exit points were sealed. When the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, the militants hiding there opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.
Security forces also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter, they said, adding that two security force personnel were injured. Three militants were killed in the encounter, sources said, adding that one of the soldier later succumbed in the hospital.
The operation was going on when the reports last came in, they said.
