Srinagar, Sept 24 (UNI) Alert troops foiled a terror attack in the border town of Uri in north Kashmir on Sunday when they intercepted and challenged a group of infiltrators, ensuing an encounter in which three foreign militants were killed so far. A soldier and three civilians were also injured while two houses were damaged in the encounter, which has almost ended. The search operation was going on when the reports last came in. Director General of Police (DGP) Dr SP Vaid said the militants were planning to carry out September 18, 2016 type suicide attack on Army camp in which 18 soldiers were killed and over 20 others injured. Four Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were also killed in the encounter. A senior police officer Natish Kumar said security forces spotted a group of militants at village Kalgi in Uri in Baramulla district in the wee hours. When challenged and asked to surrender militants opened fire, he said, adding that the fire was returned and in the exchange of fire, a foreign militant was killed. A Defence ministry spokesman this evening said that two infiltrators were killed in the operation which was still going on when the reports last came in. Another militant was also killed in the encounter, official sources told UNI adding that a soldier and three civilians were also injured in the exchange of fire. Two houses were damaged, they said. However, search operation in the area continued to make sure that there were no more militant left in the area, they said. A senior Army officer near the encounter site said there were three militants holed up in the area. In a series of tweets earlier during the day Mr Kumar said 'Terrorists movement spotted in Kalgi area of #Uri. Operation launched by Baramulla Police, @adgpi and @crpf_srinagar. @JmuKmrPolice.' He said, 'During search op, #terrorists opened fire. Villagers entrapped in gun battle rescued. 1 terrorist killed so far. Operation is still on.' Another senior police officer Imtiyaz Hussain said a Pakistani militant was killed in the encounter. Security forces are searching for two more militants in the area. Dr Vaid talking to reporters on the sidelines of Police-Public Mela here on Sunday said alert security forces averted repeat of September 18, 2016 like Fidayeen attack in Uri by intercepting the militants.
