2018 to be remembered for change in power in Chhattisgarh

2018 to be remembered for change in power in Chhattisgarh

By Ashok Kumar Sahu

Raipur, Jan 1 (UNI) The year 2018 will be remembered for the end of 15-year long rule of Bharatiya Janata Party and return of Congress to power with over two third majority.

Bharatiya Janata Party which had stormed to power after assembly elections in the year 2003, first time after Chhattisgarh state formation, registered victory in next consecutive assembly elections held in 2008 and 2013 and retained power in the state. This time, however, it suffered humiliating defeat in assembly elections held in November. With this, Janta Congress Chhattisgarh too emerged as third force in the state.

An interesting aspect of recently concluded assembly elections in the state was that BJP president Amit Shah had set a target of winning more than 65 seats in Chhattisgarh under ‘Mission 65 plus’ but Congress registered landslide victory on 68 seats, more than the target set by BJP. BJP was reduced to mere 15 seats.

Although Congress was in opposition after losing three previous elections in the state the number of its MLAs in state legislative assembly was between 38 and 39. But for the first time, any political party formed a government with more than two third majority in the state this time.

Chhattisgarh had so far witnessing two-party system of BJP and Congress. Left parties are almost non-existent, though BSP had been making its presence felt with two seats. This time Janta Congress Chhattisgasrh (J), a new political party floated by former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi after he quit Congress, forged an alliance with Mayawati’s BSP and fought assembly elections together. While Janta Congress Chhattisgarh won five seats, BSP registered victory in two seats. With this victory Janta Congress Chhattisgarh has been recognised as state level party by the Election Commission.
