20 pc of Bengal Assembly members from Muslim community

Kolkata, May 26 (UNI) Even as Muslims constitute nearly 28 per cent of the West Bengal population, only 20 per cent from the community have found place in the state Assembly, showing no rise from the last time. The headcount of Muslim representatives in the 15th Assembly to be constituted on May 27 shows that their number remains at 59, exactly the same as in the previous House that functioned between 2011 and 2016. The Trinamool Congress, which has swept the polls to retain power by capturing most of the seats has the highest number of members from the community-32, five more than what they had the last time. On the other hand, the Left's share has reduced to half-nine from 18- in keeping with its overall electoral performance that saw its number of seats coming down to 32 from 62. The CPI(M), the major constituent of the Front, has only eight Muslim lawmakers in the new House-a fall by five as compared to the strength in the 2011-2016 House. The All India Forward Bloc, which had two Muslim representatives in the previous House, now has only one. But the Congress, which has finished a distant second with 44 seats, has 18 members from the Muslim community-a handsome increase from 13. However, most of the Muslim legislators of the Congress are from its traditional strongholds of Murshidabad and Malda districts, which have larger Muslim population than elsewhere in the state. Among the prominent Muslim members of the new Assembly are former ministers Javed Khan and Firhad Hakim (Both Trinamool Congress), Abdul Mannan (Congress) and Anisur Rahman (CPI-M).
