2 militants gunned down in Pulwama; protests

Srinagar, Jan 21 (UNI) Two militants, holed up in a house, in Naina Batpora village near Pulwama, were killed by the security forces in a protracted encounter that concluded. A civilian was also killed allegedly by security personnel after the encounter. An unruly mob held a violent demonstration protesting against the alleged killing of the civilian. Protesters contended that a youth, Parvez Ahmad Guroo, was shot dead by security forces, leaving the area after the firefight, near his house. Defence spokesman Col N N Joshi said the gunbattle broke out in village Naina Batpora in Pulwama when Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operations Group(SoG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF launched a joint operation following a tip off about the presence of militants. When security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there resorted to indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. Security forces retaliated. The spokesman yesterday said reinforcement was rushed to the area and cordon around the village was tightened to plug all exit points to foil any attempt by militants to escape. However, due to darkness, operation against the militants was suspended until yesterday morning. Both the ultras were neutralised during the encounter which resumed at first light. One of the slain militants was said to be a top functionary of terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen. A security force vehicle was also torched by the demonstrators. Security forces and state police personnel burst teargas shells and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the demonstrators, who raised separatist slogans and pelted stones. The protestors were demanding registration of FIR against security personnel for killing Guroo. Reports of massive demonstrations were also received from adjoining villages, where additional security forces were rushed to maintain law and order. UNI BAS-SS RP1805
