1st Coronavirus patient in Sikkim doing well in isolation ward of Govt Hospital Gangtok: Health Secretary Dr Pempa

Gangtok,May 23 (UNI) Sikkim reported the first case of coronavirus on Saturday after remaining safe from the pandemic since the breakout of the infection in India.
The 25-year-old man was under facility quarantine at Rabongla Jawahar Navodya Vidyalaya in South Sikkim. He returned to the state on May 19 last.
He was staying as a paying guest at Haiderpur Delhi where he attended coaching classes for competitive exams.
Director General cum Secretary Health, Dr Pempa Tshering Bhutia said here today that the patient
had started from Delhi on May 17 by bus and reaching Sikkim via Siliguri on May 19.
He reached Rabongla via Melli checkpost.
He showed symptoms like fever and chills on May 21 at the quarantine centre where he had been isolated, after which Doctor from Health Centre visited and sent him to South District Hospital in Namchi.
He was referred to the Government Hospital, here, he added.
"He was found Coronavirus positive on Trunat test conducted (at new COVID-19 unit set up) at Govt hospital," he said.
In an emergency press conference, in the late evening, Dr Pempa said though the patient’s report was positive on Trunat test, "yet we could not reveal it as trunat positive result is not 100% correct".
His throat swab was sent to North Bengal Medical College Hospital, Siliguri today and COVID-19 was confirmed in the evening.
However, the stable has no more fever and chills, according to Dr Pempa.
All the 11 people travelling with the patient, including the driver of the Bus driver, would be tested, she added.
