19th India Design Summit – “Design for Social Sector” held

Panaji, Sep 21 (UNI) The 19’th India Design Summit began on Friday here focusing on social sector to deep dive in the sector specific aspects and applications of design.
Social sector in India includes several important components such as education, health and medical care, water supply and sanitation, poverty alleviation, housing conditions etc. that play a vital contribution in human development.
The summit addressed the need of focusing on augmenting design strategies to cater to the problems of social sector to create better standard of living. The initiative is aimed at driving the development of rural as well as urban sector while addressing the needs of the bottom of the social pyramid. The summit presentations emphasize on having in-depth case-studies on design interventions in the social sector.
Speaking at the Interactive Session on Day One of the Summit Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stressed on Antyodaya (uplifting of the population belonging to the bottom of the pyramid) in order to change a nation.
He mentioned about reaching out to the needy, one requires proper understanding of socio-economic status. Solving social problems requires intense planning, correct data and dedicated implementation to change the scenario.
He also reiterated that he was glad to note that designers have applied their knowledge to the social sector and are looking at “social profit” as the end result of their work “.
Goa Governor Mridula Sinha presented the 9th CII Design Excellence Awards 2019 and congratulated the award winners.
While addressing the delegates at India Design Summit this morning, she said design had been omnipresent in the nature.
The conference’s theme, ‘Design for Social Sector’ had been very appropriate and design innovations should be aligned with this critical need while based on the nation’s socio – cultural moorings, she said.
She also made a mention of Jaipur Foot design being the outcome of research in human psyche, functional needs and convenience of usage.
Ms Sinha observed that design while embracing modernity should be based on tradition.
Taking a few examples, she urged the designers to consider the emotional needs of the family, country’s cultural and human values for design of dwellings and even office spaces.
She felt that NGO’s for their reach and contribution to socio economic fabric of the country can be termed as the fifth pillar of the democracy.
