1928 movie restored by BFI with live score by Anoushka Shankar premiers in India

Kolkata, Nov 5 (UNI) An India wide premiere of the Indian silent classic Shiraz, restored by the conservation team at the BFI National Archive, has been specially commissioned to mark the UK-India Year of Culture 2017.
British Council and British Film Festival in partnership with Sangit Kala Mandir organised the screening of the film at Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi.
The 1928 epic British-German-Indian co-production silent film tells the story behind the construction of the Taj Mahal. It’s a tale of love and underlying devotion, following Shiraz, the building’s designer, and his childhood sweetheart, the 17th century princess who became the Empress Mumtaz Mahal-to whom the mausoleum was dedicated.
Shiraz is the second of the three remarkable silent films shot entirely on location by the lead actor and producer of the movie Himanshu Rai with German director Franz Osten. For the modern viewer, much of the appeal of this lavish spectacle lies in the sheer beauty of the photography, as well as the rarity value of a sophisticated silent feature film.
The majestic beauty of the movie has been enhanced by a specially commissioned score, performed live with an eight-piece ensemble of players on Indian and Western instruments, composed by Anoushka Shankar. Shiraz is also the very first film score of the six-time Grammy nominated artist.
