Zagreb, Mar 23 (UNI) A strong 5.3 magnitude earthquake on Sunday hit Croatian capital, Zagreb, injuring 17 people and causing widespread damage, including to the capital’s cathedral.
Amid the partial lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country where 235 people were tested positive, the quake compelled the people to come out of their homes. At many places, hospital were evacuated.
A total of 17 people were injured in the quake. A 15-year-old was in critical condition, the local authorities said.
According to media reports, the epicentre was four miles north of the capital at a depth of six miles, and the 5.3-magnitude earthquake was followed by a number of tremors.
Croatia Prime Minister Andrej Plenković termed the quake the biggest in Zagreb in the last 140 years.
The quake also damaged some parts of the country’s Parliament building.
Croatia’s Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković said that damage to the parliament building meant sessions would be postponed.
