10 lakh smart meters to be installed in Haryana

Chandigarh, Dec 1 (UNI) As many as 10 lakh new smart meters will be installed in Haryana and the state government has initiated its purchase process. These meters will also have prepaid facility and it will replace the manual meter reading in about five years.
Disclosing this information in Kaithal on Saturday, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Uttar and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, Shatrujeet Kapoor said that the electricity bills are being sent on the mobile phones of consumers through SMS by the Nigams.
He said that the power utilities have allotted the tender for the purchase of 10 lakh new smart meters so as to bring transparency in meter reading and bill making. He said that under Mhara Gaon, Jagmag Gaon scheme, out of 900 rural feeders, 24 hours electricity is being supplied on 605 feeders. On each rural feeder, about Rs 1.50 crore are being spent on the replacement of electricity poles, wires and transformers. This work is being done by selecting three feeders each from every sub-division. Last year during April-May, raids were conducted in various government institutions and about 350 cases were registered to stop power thefts.
He said that under the scheme for the settlement of pending electricity bills, 10,000 consumers of Kaithal district are linked to the scheme and 65,000 other consumers would also avail the benefit of the scheme till December 31, 2018.
He said that the officers have been directed to prepare a village wise and ward-wise list of those who have pending bills to pay. These lists would be shared with Sarpanches and District Administration, on the basis of which they would contact the consumers who have not paid pending power bill and would encourage to pay their bills.
He said that the 24 hours power availability will facilitate both women and children and new industries would come up which would also open job opportunities for unemployed persons. He said that on the demand of consumers, the facility of meter testing has been provided again. The recruitment process of filling the vacant posts in Power Utilities department is in progress, in which about 4,500 are technical and 4,500 are non-technical. After the recruitment, there would be no shortage of staff in the department.
