Mr Prabhu said 16 per cent of the Indian rail network handled 60 per cent of railways work and that was the reason that most of the networks were operating on capacity of 150 per cent or 160 per cent.
''I am happy to say that during the last two and half years, we have sanctioned 16,500 km of doubling or tripling. During the previous 70 years, it was just about 20,000 km. During the last five years average of capex of investment was Rs 35,000 crore. But, had that investment been made in this, the situation may have been as bad as it is,'' he said.
Stating that investment was also being made to remove technical bottlenecks, he said the ministry had decided to change all the meter gauge into broad gauge.
