New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) Assamese film ‘Village Rockstars’, the story of ‘poor but amazing children’ who live a fun-filled life, has been chosen as India’s entry to the Oscars awards in the Best foreign language film category.

An announcement in this regard was made at a press conference by the Film Federation of India, tasked with the responsibility to chose India’s entry to the Oscars in the category.

The decision was taken by an all-India jury constituted by Film Federation of India (FFI) under the chairmanship of Kannada producer Rajendra Singh Babu

The film was chosen as India’s entry to the Oscars from among 28 films vying for the category.

These included Meghna Gulzar’s “Raazi”, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmaavat”, the Rani Mukerji-starrer “Hichki”, Nandita Das’ ‘Manto’, Shoojit Sircar’s “October”, “Love Sonia” directed by Tabrez Noorani, “Tumbaad”, “Halkaa” and “Kadvi Hawa”.

Directed by Rima Das, ‘Village Rockstars’ has been set in a village of Chhaygaon in Assam.

The film follows Dhunu, a girl who grows up in poverty and learns to fend for herself. However, that does not prevent her from following her dream of forming a rock band and owning a guitar someday.

The film had earlier won the Best Feature film award at the 65th National film awards, held in May.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and India premiere at the Mumbai Film Festival 2018.

Hindi film “Newton” by director Amit Masurkar and starring Rajkummar Rao was India’s official submission to the Oscars last year.
