'Tubelight': Endearing acts by Salman, Matin stand out in this heartwarming tale about futility of war

New Delhi, Jun 24 (UNI) He left the audiences teary with his 'good samaritan' act in 'Bajrangi Bhaijan'. In his latest film 'Tubelight', Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan comes up with another endearing act as the 'die hard' pacifist who brings home to the audience the futility of war and the fact that faith can move mountains. 'Tubelight' is the story of Laxman Singh Bisht (Salman Khan), a slow-witted person, who lives under the able protection of his loving and caring younger brother Bharat Singh Bisht (Sohail Khan) in a small town called Jagatpur in Kumaon. While others tease Laxman, bully him and call him tubelight, Bharat shuts them up and protects his brother whenever needed. Laxman's world falls apart when a war breaks out – The Sino-Indian war of 1962 - and his brother Bharat and other youngsters from the town join the Indian Army and go to the front to fight. Laxman also tries to join the Army but fails the physical test and hence he stays back at home. When Bharat does not return from the war and is reported to be dead, crestfallen Laxman vows to find his brother at any cost. The film is about Laxman's journey of faith, that everything will be alright, and his brother will return. Amid the story of Laxman and Bharat, 'Tubelight' also talks about the story of an Indian woman of Chinese origin Lee Ling (Zhu Zhu) who comes from Calcutta to stay there with her little son Guwo (Matin Ray Tangu). While Laxman hates them at first, Lee and Guwo turn his friends after Banne Chacha (Om Puri) tells him to follow the Gandhian principle of befriending who you consider your enemy. The film, inspired by American war-drama film 'Little Boy', begins with the brothers leading a halcyon existence in their small town. We are shown how, as a loving and caring brother, Bharat shields Laxman from the barbs of the residents and bullying by the kids. The brilliant chemistry between the brothers and their camaraderie comes across in the film. Life is all fun and play till the breakout of Sino-Indian war of 1962. After the Army comes to the town for a recruitment drive, Bharat and other youngsters from the town join the Indian Army and go to the front to fight. As news comes of his brother dying in the war, we are shown a crestfallen Laxman. This, coupled with Laxman's wish that all this violence stops, brings out the futility of war. The character of Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, who has lost her father in the same war, also bring across the futility of war. Salman's speech in the film about futility of war is touching and warms the cockles of the heart. It is undoubtedly another award-worthy performance by the actor. Sohail Khan impresses in his brief role as Laxman's brother. However, the surprise of the film is child actor Matin Ray Tangu. As Lee Ling's son Guwo, he comes across as cute and a bundle of talent. He also shares an endearing chemistry with Salman. As Lee Ling , who comes from Calcutta to stay with her little son Guwo, actress Zhu Zhu comes across as refreshing. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is brilliant in his cameo in the film while late actor On Puri impresses as Banne Chcha. After 'Bajrangi Bhaijan ', which stressed on the message of India-Pakistan amity, Kabir Khan again manages to effectively put across the message of futility of war through the film and Laxman's character. He is also to be credited for brilliantly etching out the characters of the film. The cinematography by Aseem Mista is excellent. The music is not much to talk about except for 'Main Agar'. In a nutshell, 'Tubelight' is worth watching for the endearing acts by Salman and Matin and a heart warming tale about futility of war. Rating:3.5/5: One for endearing acts by Salman and Matin, one for the heart warming tale, one for Kabir Khan's direction and 0.5 for cinematography. UNI AR SV 1032
