'Ranabaali' rooted in a dark chapter of British Raj famine history

Mumbai, March 11 (UNI) "Ranabaali" starring newlywed Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandana, is linked to the tragic famine of the British Raj era.
Mounted by Mythri Movie Makers, the film is set to be one of the biggest films of 2026. This historical drama will bring to the big screen the real events and unheard stories of Indian history, which have rarely been talked about.
It will show those chapters of history that people have forgotten. With this project, Vijay Deverakonda will be seen in a powerful character, inspired by the story of an unknown person who really needs to be recognised.
Excitement surrounding this film has been building since the first glimpse was released. Judging by the visuals, the film's story, set during the era of colonial India, is set to be powerful and emotional. The makers' aim is not just to entertain, but to uncover historical truths that many people are still unaware of.
Interestingly, the backdrop of 'Ranabaali' is connected to one of the most horrific chapters in Indian history. The story recounts the devastating famine that claimed the lives of over 10 million Indians.
The film also exposes the brutal policies of the British Raj, which plundered India to the tune of approximately $45 trillion. Historians have debated these figures for years, but the devastating impact of colonial policies can never be denied.
One of the darkest periods in Indian history was the Great Famine of 1876 to 1878. In Rayalaseema, now part of Andhra Pradesh, farmers had already been devastated by recurring droughts. When the monsoons failed in 1876, famine spread rapidly, yet grain exports continued.
Meanwhile, British official Sir Richard Temple imposed strict restrictions to reduce expenditures and even reduced rations in famine camps. Nearly 700,000 people died in Rayalaseema alone, while millions died across India.
This tragedy wasn't just a natural disaster, but the result of policies enacted in the name of empire. And it is in this world that "Ranabaali's" story is woven.
The film depicts the rebellions, both large and small, that broke out in famine-stricken Rayalaseema. In these movements, helpless people seized stored grain, refused to pay heavy taxes and fought for their lives, only to be labeled "criminals" in British records.
While their names are rarely found in official documents, the memories of these rebels who stood up against famine and injustice live on in Rayalaseema folklore.
Directed by Rahul Sankrityan and produced by Y. Ravi Shankar and Naveen Yerneni of Mythri Movie Makers in association with T-Series. The film boasts a prominent cast, including international actor Arnold Vosloo, making it even more special globally.
'Ranabaali' is slated to release in theaters on September 11.
