New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) Former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday demanded a 'thorough inquiry' over the killing of four Hyderabad men, accused of rape and murder, to determine whether the encounter was genuine or not.
According to Telangana police, the four men, Mohammad Arif, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu, accused of raping and killing of woman veterinary doctor in Hyderabad, was shot dead when they tried to snatch a weapon and used it in an attempt to escape, in the early hours, today.
Talking to media persons in Ranchi, the former Home Minister, who was released from Tihar jail after the Supreme Court granted him bail in the INX Media case, said that he did not know the facts of the police action.
"I was coming from Delhi to Ranchi. The incident happened about 0330 or 0400 in Hyderabad. I don't know the facts of what happened there", Mr Chidambaram said, however, added that there should be a detailed inquiry on the incident.
"As a responsible person, whatever happened in Hyderabad must be thoroughly inquire into to find out it was a genuine encounter, that the accused were trying to flee or whether it was anything else", he added.
The four men, all lorry workers, were arrested on November 29 for allegedly raping and murdering the woman and later burning her body, and the incident had caused widespread outrage in different sections of the society.
Another Congress leader, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, however, said that "sometime, shall understand the mood and sentiments of the people of the nation and stand with them".
"Sometimes in spite of all the debates and Human Rights logics, we shall understand the mood and sentiments of the people of the nation and stand with them. After all, democracy is all about 'The People'", the senior lawyer tweeted.
