'Members of the Problematic Family' becomes the opening night film of IFFM 2026

Mumbai, July 17 (UNI) Critically acclaimed Tamil film, 'Members of the Problematic Family' has been selected as the opening night film of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2026, one of the biggest celebrations of Indian cinema in the Southern Hemisphere.
The film will have its Australian premiere in Melbourne on August 14.
Following its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) 2026, the film will continue its international festival journey at IFFM. Director R. Gautham and lead actor Karuththadayan will attend the opening night ceremony and premiere. The film has also received nominations in the Best Indie Film and Best Director categories under the Jury Competition at the festival, which runs from August 13th to 23rd.
Directed by R. Gautham, the film chronicles the emotional turmoil that engulfs the family and community of a young woman named Prabha after her mysterious death. During the 16-day funeral rites, long-buried relationships, emotions, and tensions between various family members are brought to the surface. Through multiple characters, the film deeply explores grief, family relationships, and human emotions.
Gautham said, "'Members of the Problematic Family' is very close to my heart. The film tells a story of grief, family, and the complex relationships within society. Following its premiere at the Berlinale, it is an honor for us to be the opening night film at IFFM. IFFM has become an important platform for Indian cinema internationally, and I, along with my team, am excited to present this film to Australian audiences."
