'Fiela’s Child’ wins hearts at IFFK

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 7 (UNI) South African filmmaker Brett Michael Innes’ ‘Fiela’s Child’ conquered the hearts and minds of the audience at the 24th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) when the film was screened on the second day of the festival.
‘Fiela’s Child’ is the first film to be screened in the International Competition section of the festival.
The film depicts the strong bond of love between a mixed-race woman Fiela and her adopted white son Benjamin, alias Lukas van Rooyen. Fiela’s determination and love and the stellar performance of actress Shaleene Surtie-Richards raised a storm of applause.
After the screening, co-producer Danie Bester spoke about the struggles of financing films which employ actors whose backgrounds are primarily in theatre.
Lebanese director Oualid Mouaness’ ‘1982’ was shown at the Kripa theatre. Mouaness uses the recollection of his own experience of the 1982 Lebanon War to weave together a claustrophobic thriller about fugitives hiding in a house from Israeli soldiers.
The highlight of the film is that it manages to generate extreme tension without explicit violence. It had won nine international awards including the FIPRESCI Critics Award at the El Gouna International Film Festival, Best Film at the Rome, Montpelier Mediterranean and Asian World film festivals as well as the NETPAC award at the Toronto International Film Festival. As many as 13 films are participating in this year’s International Competition category including Lijo Jose Pelissery’s ‘Jallikkattu’, Hao You’s ‘My Dear Friend’ and Boris Lojkine’s ‘Camille’.
