New Delhi, Dec 31 (UNI)Year 2016 has been a good year for Bollywood in terms of its box office collections as some movies managed to strike a chord with the audiences and ranked in moolah at the ticket window. This year Bollywood superstars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar dazzled the cinegoers with films like ‘Dangal’, ‘Sultan’, ‘Airlift and ‘Rustom’ which were among the top grossers of the year 2016. ‘Sultan’, based on the life of Olympian wrestler Sultan Ali Khan, was the highest grosser of 2016. It was made on a budget of Rs 90 crores, the film earned a whopping lifetime business of over Rs 300 crores. Sultan became the third Bollywood film to enter the Rs 300 crore club.The film directed by Ali Abbas Zafar having Anushka Sharma as the female lead, is about the rise, fall and rise of Sultan who creates milestones in his journey to become an international wrestler and even wins at the Olympics.The movie, was highly rated by the critics for its entertainment value Another Khan earner which did very well and is going very strong at the box office is Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’. Made with a budget of Rs 100 crore , the movie did an initial business of over Rs 155 crores and is raking up moolahas in theatres across India.It has also done good business in the overseas market. Released on over 4,300 screens in India and 1000 screens overseas, ‘Dangal’ got the biggest opening in Indian cinema’s history. The movie is a biographic sports drama directed by Nitesh Tiwari in which former wrestler Mahavir Sigh Phogat, trains his young daughters Geeta and Babita to become world class grapplers. The film has crossed the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide and broken many records in the process. ’M S Dhoni- The Untold Story” was yet another big grosser of 2016. Sushant Singh Rajput starrer proves to be a promising watch for all Dhoni fans as the movie enlightens the audience into Dhoni’s world. It’s a biopic on his life, traces back his journey from being a Ranchi boy who is strong willed on getting a chance to hold a bat instead of wicket keeping to becoming one of India’s most successful captains ever. Made on a budget of Rs 104 crores, it garnered over Rs 132 crores. Akshay Kumar also made his presence felt in 2016 with “Airlift”. Made on a shoe string budget of Rs 30 crores, it earned whopping Rs 127 crores worldwide. Starring action hero Akshay Kumar and newcomer Nimrat Kaur, it is the untold story of India’s biggest evacuation mission. Akshay also featured in “Rustom”, another hit of the year which grossed over Rs 127 crores all over the world despite being made at a low budget of Rs 40 crores. This was Akshay Kumar’s second flick having made it to the list of highest earners of the year 2016. Inspired by true incidents, Akshay Kumar is in Navy uniform in the movie. Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma-starrer ‘’Ae Dil hai Mushkil” was another big opener of 2016. The movie ran into controversy even before it was released as it starred Pakistani actor Fawad Khan when Shiv Sena in Mumbai was against casting Pak actors in Bollywood films. Director Karan Johar had to run from pillar to post to get a clearance. With a star studded casting of Ranbir Kapoor-Aishwarya Rai and Anushka Sharma , it did a decent business of Rs 112 crores worldwide despite readied on a budget of Rs 72 crores. Among other movies which captivated the movie buffs all the year round and minted crores were ’Housefull 3 “. Made with a budget of Rs 85 crores , it earned Rs 108 crores at the box office.
