‘Country in the grip of severe economic crisis’ : Chidambaram

Tiruchirappalli, Dec 8 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P.Chidambaram on Sunday said that the “country was in the grip of severe economic crisis and the BJP-led NDA government at the centre was clueless on reviving the economy.”
“The government could not understand the magnitude of the crisis (economy). It had betrayed the massive mandate given by the electorate just seven months ago,” Mr.Chidambaram told newsmen here.
He said no one would have dreamt of betrayal to such a level within a short span of time. The Indian economy was in very bad shape.
About 30 crore daily wage labourers got an average of 22 to 23 days of employment before demonetization, he said, adding, the recent report of the ‘National Sample Survey’ shows that the number of days of employment had come down to 12 from 15 a month, which means the annual income of daily wage labourers had shrunk by 50 percent.
Similarly, the consumption level had also come down to 24 percent. It had ultimately brought down the buying power of the people resulting in the fall of the economy. But, the government was thinking on supporting only a section of corporate, Mr Chidambaram said.
The NDA government was bankrupt, he alleged.
